Choosing a mobile computer is not as easy as it once was. It seems as if new form factors are popping up yearly. Now, there are a lot of options that you must consider when purchasing a new computer. Below we will discuss the different options and how to choose between them.
Different Mobile Computer Options On The Market:
Believe it or not, but laptops can have screens that reach all the way up to 17 inches. Laptops, back in the day, were the computers to go for if you wanted them to be portable and mobile. However, with all of the latest technology changes and evolution, they are becoming more like desktop replacements instead of portable machines. Laptops are actually now the form factor that you go for when you primarily want power, not portability.
There used to be a difference between ultrabook/ netbook and laptops. Traditionally, ultrabook/ netbook didn’t include an optical bay drive and had fewer connections. However, as technology has progressed, ultrabook/ netbook and laptops have sort of merged. Because optical bay drives have become less and less desirable for consumers due to the shift towards digital content, consumers are demanding them less and less. In fact, a lot of people actually prefer not to have them as they can take up a lot of space and they can get heavy.
The tablet pc is the ultra portable solution. It was put on the market for the users that wanted something that was extremely portable, lightweight, and energy efficient. These devices were primarily marketed towards business users and travelers. That way, they would have a device that they could take with them to complete work on without having to lug around a huge laptop. However, they have since become marketable for pretty much everyone – especially students. These are great for doing simple computing tasks and consuming media.
How To Choose?
The number one factor that you are going to want to base your decision off of is the size. The size is the biggest difference between all of the devices mentioned above. If you need to have a very compact size computer at all times, you are going to want to go with a netbook form factor. Whereas, if you don’t need something incredibly portable, you might want to go with a larger option due to having a larger screen size. For a lot of people, viewing content, creating content, and/or working on a screen that is very small is impractical.
Are you planning on using your computer for basic computing and other basic tasks? If you are not a power user, you might be able to get away with getting a low power netbook which will sacrifice computing power for better battery life. Whereas, if you are a power user and you like gaming on your computers, you are likely going to want more computing power and will have to sacrifice portability for this.
These are the main factors that you should consider when choosing between these options.
